Welcome to the secret info on the Secret Game Club. My vision is to get a few game developers together to motivate each other to keep working on our games. The imaginary club member is a solo dev who is working a day job but wants to work on their game during nights and weekends or whenever they are free. However, they also want to release their game eventually, and to create a finished product to show the world. I am not going to be strict on membership criteria, but the one thing I do ask is that you are working on a game that you plan to release. If you are a full time indie dev, you'll make the rest of us jealous with how much you get done in 40 hours compared to how much we get done in a couple evenings, but that is okay. But if you don't have a project you are working on, you won't be able to do the following. The obligations I'd ask of members would be a weekly meeting. In this meeting, you will tell us what you had worked on last week, what problems you had in working on it, and what you plan to work on the coming week. In addition, I will ask that everyone play and give feedback on each other's games. I reiterate that I don't want to be strict. This club is more for keeping us focused than anything else. I am envisioning four people, or perhaps four "games" if it is not just solo developers. The reason for just four is to make sure meetings stay short. If there is such a large interest, we can make multiple clubs. I am sure I forgot to write something here. It has been updated and will be updated again. If you are interested in joining such a club, join the alakajam server at https://discord.gg/QcsM6bHz98 and ask for laaph#1197 ## FAQ Q: Is it really secret? A: Considering you heard about it, we aren't doing a very good job of keeping it secret. But of course it's secret! It says so right in the title. It has to be secret because it sounds cooler that way. Feel free to tell everyone about it. Q: What kind of project should I be working on? A: Most any project is okay, but the main focus I'm looking at is longer term projects meant for release. We are hoping to motivate developers trying to do a larger project. Non-game-dev projects are okay, but it's better if the rest of us can try it out and find it useful. This is not really meant for game jams, though. Q: How do I join? A: Re-read the directions above, and decode the secret riddles within. Q: I have a team, I am not working on my game as a solo developer. Can I join? A: Your entire team can join! Q: If lots of people join the Secret Game Dev club, will meetings get extremely long? A: If so many people want to join, we will split it in to multiple Secret Game Dev clubs so that meetings can remain short. Q: When will meetings be? A: That will be determined by members of the Secret Game Dev club. Basically any time that everyone can agree on. Q: Will our meetings consist of chat (text only), audio, or (gasp) video? A: So far all our meetings have consisted of just chat/text supplemented with screenshots or animated gifs. I don't think people want to be on video or share their vocal sounds, but if you do, you can upload video or sound for the rest of us. :) Q: Is one meeting a week my only obligation if I join? A: One meeting a week will be the only real obligation, but I hope that you will help and give feedback the other projects in the club. In my ideal vision, we will help each other so much we will put each other's names in the credits of our projects! But, in the interest of promoting the motivation to keep you working on your game, I am trying to make it as stress free as possible. You won't be kicked out if you show up to the meeting and say "I worked on nothing last week. Next week... um, I'll do the bare minimum." Q: Wait? Can I get kicked out of the club? A: You can get kicked out of the club if you violate Alakajam's code of conduct (please behave), or if you lurk but never partake. Q: Can you tell me more? A: So far it's been very informal! We share our progress. We might see one game actually get released from this coming soon! Last updated 08 Jun 2021. Added little bits about how we've been doing so far. Last updated 23 Nov 2020.
